Evaluation (See guidance below for more information)

You are required to write a 500 word evaluation of this module.

This module for me isn’t easy. After realized the over complication of my drawing, like I always focus on the use of tone, the detailed shape of object or people. In this module, I tried to simply my drawing a little bit, showing less detail in the human figure. Compare to my work from visual skills, I can see I am changing and I am pleased.
I remember my friend told me my work are very recognizable because I only draw people with many details of the face, always relied on digital software and my tablet. So in this module, I tried to avoid drawing things with my tablet, I have tried many physical materials such as watercolor, color pencil, ink, collage, screen print… something I haven’t tried in the last module. It is interesting to see what I can create out of my comfort zone. I will definitely keep trying new technique and material in my work.
The problem that worries me about is, simplify my drawing or trying some different way to draw an object, it is fun but I feel like I also kind of lost what is my illustrations style? I think I need to do more experiment or try repeat one drawing. See what I really like and definably will use it more often. Because I feel like I been drawing digitally for quite a while. At the beginning, I even feel like I cannot draw something I can be happy about without my tablet. But in the end, I realized it is also fun to draw with other material. In this module, I used a lot of watercolors, and I have also watched many watercolor videos from the internet to study some skills of watercolor.
The most difficult part for me in this module is coming up with those ideas. I looked up some artist like Sebastian Magnai, Daniel Ablitt…their work helped me with my development of ideas. I have learned how important it is to do some research and looking other people's work. I also had a problem with putting my drawings together in a picture book. By looking through Sebastian’s work, I finally found a way to solve it. Although I feel like it could be better.
Overall, I learned a lot through this module. Although because of some problem, I had to miss a one-week session. But I am very enjoying this module. I hope in the next module, I can use more media and try many different way to draw people not just my same old style.

Tell an Untold Story- Final Picture Book

TREE and I

Cover

Content

Thoughts:

Overall I am quite happy about this book. Compare to last module (OUIL403 visual skills), my drawings are more kind of simple and clean now. Not just relied on digital software and some drawing skills I have learned before. In this brief  I have tried many other media such as watercolour, paper cutting, ink... these things which I haven't tried in the last module.
The negative thoughts of this book is lack of correlation. Although I used the circle frame to remedy this problem, it still looks like each individual illustration are done by different people... It kind of reflected how I was trying to create something that I haven't tried before and finding my own illustration style though this module, and this make this book has an even better meaning for me.

Tell an Untold Story- development 4

Sebastian Magnani

In order to make my illustrations fit together in the picture book, I decided to cut them into the circle shape.

Tell an Untold Story- development 3

Reference:
Daniel Ablitt

I really like his work. His oil painting are full of mystery and full of sadness and loneliness. His paintings are like a dream which I wanted to live in.
Idea:
I always like the feeling when I with tree or in the forest. Only me and trees, all I can hear just the rustle of leaves. Seems like they are my friend, they can hear all my complains and calm me down.

Girl in the forest

Tree and I

I really want to try something new, something I haven't played with.  My friend always look at my drawing and says' I can tell these were done by your hand, its so you'. So I always want to do something which they can not recognised its from me. I decided to do some collage which I have never try before. I am pleased with the results, I think they are quite successful. It definitely give me some confidence for me to do more collage in the future.

Talking to tree
I drew these two on the black paper using gold and white pen. The first one I want to show me talking with tree and then a leaf fell off on my head, seems like the tree is comforting me.

Become a tree
I had this idea in my head every time I'm in forest, like I became one of them.
I drew these with watercolour and gold pen, I want to show the person who transforming to a tree, from the bottom to the head, gradually become one of them. Once again, I overcomplicate the image by showing too many details. But sometime I just can not control myself.

Thoughts:
The problem with these work is there are not quite relatable with each other. They are all about trees but it seems like there were drew by different people. Although this is a part of my goal, to try something new. I am not sure how I can put them together to a picture book.

Tell an Untold Story- Development 2

Reference:
Meigetsu-in Temple (Japan )

This remind me of my hometown, because my window were faced to a tree in our garden. I always sit on the window and observing that tree, watching its leaf falling on the ground, and then my mum grabbed me to sweep the floor.
So I want to show the tree which faced to my window changed in different season.

Spring
Summer

Autumn
Winter
I used four colour present different tree from different season. Pink for spring because of cherry blossom and peach blossoms open in this season. Red orange for autumn because of maple tree.
I used watercolour to draw these.

My poor hand after splashing watercolour

Tea Time with my tree friend
I did this with my tablet, because I have been observe the tree next to my window for a long time. Me and this tree are like a friend. I can just sit down, have a cup of tea and talk about life.

What next?
I am going to draw the window using different media. I need to look at some windows, then decide which window suits which season.

Tell an Untold Story- Development

Brief:
Produce an illustrated picture book that communicates your research findings from Studio Brief 2

We can not control the force of nature                   Tree is also a life

When I was little, there was a old crooked tree in our community. Some says if you cut it down, this tree will bleed. Maybe that is someone make it up and it is kind of a way to protect this old tree, but my younger self believed it. I realised although tree can not walk, can not talk, but it is still just like human, it is also a life.

Composition & Frame

Rough
Single image of me, an elephant and butterfly

I think this is the most challenging brief for me. Composition and frame are the knowledge that I do not focus on before. I was a bit lost when I try in put me, an elephant and butterfly in one image. I feel like when people get overwhelmed, they can create something that they have never try before because that is how I feel from my outcome. I don't think I would draw something like this, so it surprised me. It is happy to see me get out of my comfort zone and try to create something so different from my other work. It also reminds me I need to study and work with composition and frame more offend.
