Summative Project Report

Overall, I am proud of what I have done in the module. I really enjoyed it this two brief, especially the second one. I finally can do something that I always want to do. Before I was only doing work for the uni for the module for the score, this time I feel like I am drawing for myself at last. I can finally excited about my work, and spend time to do research. Because Chinese art cultural is actually not what I really familiar with... I was very ashamed about it, now this time I have the chance to learn I feel very excited. But There are a lot of things to know and learn, I need to figure out each building, pattern, clothes are from which dynasty. At first I even want to create my own story and character but I realised that's too much work and research to do so I listened to my peer advice which is select a story or character from book or history as a reference. So I choose 'Nirvana in Fire' as my reference. 'Nirvana in Fire' is a famous Chinese drama which based on Hai Yan's novel with same name. I don't want to copy the idea from the drama completely; I made a few changes in my character design. For example, I made the main character Mei Changsu as a woman (in the original creation Mei Changsu is a male character). Therefor Mei Changsu has a very close relationship with Princess; they are more like a sister now. In the Drama the actor who played the emperor of Liang was amazing, so I decided to put he in my work too.
In this module I have experimented with many new things, for example, drawing architect, use friendly color choice for children, learn some Chinese culture. I definitely have a lot more to improve, like my composition, colour choose, line quality and drawing skills. I think it is time for me to focus a little bit. Because these two years I just kept trying new, but I feel like my drawing skills weren't improve very much. I will go to study three months course of art to focus a bit more on my skills. Hopefully, I will become more confident when I back from summer.

Characters

Lin Shu (林殊) is the son of Lin Xie, the commander general under the Emperor of Da Liang, and Grand Princess Jinyang. He was described as high-spirited and extremely bright prodigy, as well as proud and skillful by his cousin and close friend, Xiao Jingyan. However, when he and his father went off to battle the Northern Wei, they and the Chiyan Army were framed as traitors to the king, and was therefore attacked under the Emperor's orders. Only Lin Shu and a few other comrades survived the slaughter. However, as the result of the fighting, Lin Shu was poisoned by the "Poison of the Bitter Flame", and therefore underwent treatment that changed his appearance. He became weak and sensitive to the cold, and could never perform martial arts again. For the next twelve years, he created the Jiang Zuo Alliance with the help of Langya Hall, and became the chief of the pugilist world. Lin Shu, as Mei Changsu, returns to Jin Ling to stir the court's politics.

Mei Changsu (梅长苏), also known as Su Zhe (苏哲), has a calm and regal demeanor. However, he is determined to bring justice to his family as well as the Chiyan Army and is willing to do all the dirty work for Prince Jing so that he would get what he wish.

Princess Mu Nihuang (穆霓凰)  was betrothed to Lin Shu when they were teenagers, and the two had genuine feelings for each other. However, after the Chiyan incident, she and many others believed that Lin Shu was killed, although she herself believed that he wasn't a traitor. Nihuang is a general for the Mu army and guards the Southern border for the Emperor. Her exceptional fighting skills made her name present in the Langya list. After Mei Changsu returned to the capital, she was able to deduce that he was Lin Shu, with evidence from a few years back, when Mei anonymously sent her a battle plan when her army was unable to defeat the enemy.

In my design, I changed Mei Changsu a woman.

The Emperor of Liang (梁帝) (played by Ding Yongdai) held a rebellion to take the throne by force, with the help of Lin Xie, Marquise Yan and Hua Princess Linglong. However, when he heard that Lin Xie and the Chiyan army were planning a rebellion, he immediately executed his old friend, his son and his subordinates. He also executed his own son, Prince Qi, because of the conspiracy. The Emperor is very suspicious in nature, and knows what is going on behind his back, whether it is his sons fight for the throne or the Xuan Jing Bureau's heinous methods to solve cases.

What do you intend to do and why?

I really want to do concept art for game. I want to design some character. In this brief I want to design a few characters and identify who they are, what their background story are. I want to add some cultural thing into my design because I never draw it and I have absolutely have no idea how. I think it will be a good way to do some research practice and get out of the comfort zone.

‘ Illustration On Dictionary Of Classical Chinese Architecture’

I have this 'Illustration on dictionary of classical Chinese architecture' book by Wang Qijun, which is super helpful for this brief. I am going to learn some of the building in my sketchbook. Maybe I will use it in my final pieces.

I always have a interest in concept art. I like to create story and character. In this brief I would look more into concept art in game. I am planning to made up a fictional world and create several characters in this world.

Yoshitaka Amano is a Japanese illustration that I really admire.

Game:

Gigantic

I found this game in Steam one day and I was amazed by the art in this game. I really like the aesthetic of this game, the character design is also very interesting. I immediately purchased this game and play. I really enjoy it, is very colourful and visually satisfied.

Lu Yangguang

One of my favourite Chinese illustrator. Because I am going to do something include Chinese culture so I am going to look into Lu Yanguangs work. Luckily I have a series of his illustration book I can use as my tool and reference.

Manchester Art Gallery Final illustraions

I try to use the simplest way to produce some works. I like the colour to be honest. I think this it more for the children and I am not sure if it is too simple.

The left one was the original one, but I think the colour was too dark kind of like some horror movie room, so I changed it too more friendly colour.

I like the composition of this illustration, I learn from the other two illustrations above. I made it as friendly as possible, made the whole image look comfortable. I am quite proud for this final one so I selected this one to submit.

I have changed my mind, I am now looking into Manchester Art Gallery shop Prize. I am not good at shape, colour and line quality so I want to use this brief to improve my skills.

Hookworms Poster Research

I found this Hookworms poster brief is more interesting than others. I have never made a band poster before so I think it will be fun to try that out. I have listened to quite a few their music and watched some music video. It is not my favourite kind of music but I admire what they create and I like their passion. I search for some of their previous poster, and they all kind of  dark and moody which it is what I like and want to do in my work. I realised for the poster, not just drawing a image but the text are also very important. So I need to look into some writing design which might be hard for me because I have a terrible handwriting( which may consider a good thing?).

Project Report

Overall, I am not happy with what I did in this module. I am not confident in my drawing during the module.

For the first brief, it was ok; I choose Agatha Christie for my project not just because her novels are very famous but also I felt like is something I will enjoy doing because I like to draw something dark and dramatic.But then I realized it is difficult to communicate all the feeling from Agatha Christie's work. I also really want to try draw in a different style. I usually like to overcomplicate my work; now I try my best to show as less as detail I can. I was pleased that I can do that and finish my first brief very soon.

Then for Brief 2, I started to struggle. Maybe because we need to do prints, I don't do much print, and for some reason, I don't enjoy doing the screen print, so It affect me a bit. For the first time, I also try Lino print which didn't work out quite well in the end. So I choose to stay in my comfort zone and do digital print. But I feel like I can not come up with some good ideas for my digital print, it is very frustrating. I was very disappointed and had a lot of self-doubts, stating to lost motivation. I aim high but accomplish little. I had a very difficult time during this brief.

For brief 3 I would say I had a good time with it. I always had an interest in the animation field; it is very exciting for me to learn After Effect and make a small animation, although I don't like my animation because my work from brief two but it is fun for making it and learning it.

Despite I didn't enjoy this module, but this module did make understand myself more, I think it will be a good lesson for me and teach me the importance of dealing with emotion while creating, never put too much pressure on myself. I am grateful that this module can let me see who I am what I am afraid of deep inside me.

This is designed by Jed Henry and beautifully printed in David Bull's Tokyo workshop. I really like the idea of putting video on their homepage. I appreciate that it can always change your language at top right corner of their website.

Eliza Southwood has this amazing website. It is visually satisfy and I like how she add her information and her story next to her work.

To be honest I am not very pleased with the final prints, I think it is boring. I try to make them look cohesive by only using blue and pink (which I not sure is a good choice or not). I think I feel very struggle with all of this and don't even know what should I improve from this.
