Evaluation (See guidance below for more information)
You are required to write a 500 word evaluation of this module.

Throughout this Module, I gained many skills and experienced new tools. For example, I made GIFs, I learned how to use Adobe Illustrator, and I tried to use some 3D element in my work such as fabric, plastic bag, paper folding. More importantly, I realized in this module, it including many thinking, considering and planning. In the process of making illustrations, needs to found out what is successful, what is great and what makes this project exceptional. When I had some problem, ask people about it, listen to their opinion and what they suggest. In the way found the solution to solve the problem. Don’t worry if things turn out quite badly; it is also a process of experiencing and learning. I am grateful to be in these sessions and finished those tasks.

I am pleased I had the chance to make GIFs in the first brief. Creating an animation is one of my dreams, it promoted me to drawing and study art. Although GIF only has like about 3 sec long, it is still very exciting. Because of this brief, I even brought an A4 size light box. I saw many comic designs has it, and I finally get one on my own.

The second brief I had a mixed feeling out it. I was much struggled coming out of ideas about acts of kindness, though it sounds like a very simple task, we can only use shapes. This is a lot harder that I thought. Also as a beginner of Adobe Illustrator, I found it tough at first, but I believe this will get better when I use this program more offend.

I am quite happy with the last brief, not only because I am interested in Martha Graham, I very like her dance, but also I had that I idea which I never think of before, and I don’t even have a clue how can I generate this idea. The answer is simple, just try everything I think that probably will work. Some didn’t turn well like the plastic bag, but then I used fabric I suddenly feel that this is that kind of feeling I want to create.

During this module, I realized many of my weakness such as lack of idea and imagination. From making GIFs to making stickers, I stuck to these two task many times. Every time I look at other people’s work, I will have that kind of thought wish I could have a thought of that. I think I need to do more reading and research to open my eye and mind. I decide to study and practice my imagination in this summer. I think I really should to relax and clam down sometimes and try to find some of my imagination like what I was when I was younger.

Overall, I am very enjoying this module.

Person of note 6

Martha Graham

Poster

I use Photoshop to hide the wires, and adjusted the balance of colours.

I am very pleased with these three images, more importantly for me is to try some material that I haven't try before, and gradually understand how to make it work. This has been a great experience for me. It inspires me to use a more different 3D element on my work in the future. Although some might worked very badly, that experience is the most precious. So I enjoy this Task because of that.

Stamps
In the end, Considered of the size of the stamp, I decided to used two of my very simple collage work as my stamps. I then used Photoshop to change the colour and made another two as my stamps.

Postcards

Here is my postcard, collage but not just using the paper, I also used the purple stain. I want to keep it simple, so I only used three colour.

Person of note 5 - Tests

Study of Martha Graham's face

Fabric

I brought a mitre of purple stain fabric from town and use it as my new 3D element. The reason I choose this fabric is its texture is very smooth and shiny, just like those dance movement by Graham. In fact, fashion designer Roy Halston Frowick in his Halston Heritage spring 2017 collection were inspired by Martha Graham, and many of the garment from that collection have many fabric's texture similart this purple stain that I brought, very soft.

Here I sewed my fabric on my drawing. It turns out quite well but I don't want to have those wire, so I am going to Photoshop it afterwards.

Because this ruffles are changeable, so I scan it again. This one is lighter.

I also tried with glue, the ruffles are hard and strong in this one. It become another effect and feeling I think, and I can not decided which one is better.

Person of note 4- Experiment

Ruffles

I want to keep experimenting with a different 3d element, so I tried with a plastic bag. Because the plastic bag is a very light material, it is very hard to control, and I realized I could paint colour on them. Although it is a good try, I do not think it works very well or effective.

I first use the glue gun to stick the plastic bag on the paper, and I noticed it would melt with hot glue, so when I did the next one, I use another tool to paste the plastic bag.

Postcard designs

For the postcard and stamps, I do not think I would use any 3D elements. I decided to do some collage. Focusing on the movement and flowing feeling.

Feedback

- How simple is too simple?
- Consider scanning for a more 'finished' look, like Photoshop collage?
- Where is she?
- Level of clarity?
- Try use fabric.

Person on Notes 3 - Development

Movement

Then I did a further study of the movements in this preferment. I did some flow chart to show the running order.

Shapes

I then try just use shapes to show some poses in her dance. I realised it is quite hard to get what these poses are.

Fold

When Martha Graham performs this dance she is wearing a very simple flat purple costume, so every time she moves the clothes will create some ruffles. So I want to show that tugged movement by those ruffles on her costume. I tried paper fold; It turns out not as same as I thought originally,  I found it quite hard when I was wrapping paper. I then use water color to paint the face and shadows on her clothes.

Feedback and Advice

- Dance studies with 3D elements?

- It looks like you are trying to capture movement, so I think 3D but do observational drawings of dancers to truly translate it? Ask to watch at Northern Ballet?

- 2D but maybe make the shapes more detailed?

- Experimenting with shapes is exciting but you should focus on the figures- they are more effective.

- The tonal studies of dancer faces are really lovely but also nice against just simple figures on the diagram flow chart page- maybe try putting figures and shapes together in a collage way.

- You need to further develop the quality and feel of your figures. Translate your reference, gesture and line quality.

Evaluation (See guidance below for more information)

You are required to write a 500 word evaluation of this module.

Though this module I have learned a lot of skills and approaches to make the illustration. I gained much helpful knowledge of image making and understand better what illustration means. The course started with some very basic practice. I remember we had one task was observational drawing session, then we need to draw from reference, and at that time I was focusing how to remember every single detail of the image and replicate that, but I realized was wrong, that is not what reference mean. It reminds me of the time I was doing fine art, we need to draw sculptures, and I want to draw that outline shape correctly, want it to look just like a real statue, so sometimes we even can spend two weeks on just drawing that one painting of the sculpture’s head. But illustration is different. I feel like it is about image making more than drawing.

What I learned the most about were composition and frame. I did aware this is one of my weakness before, but this course helped me to make progress in that area. We had serval session was about composition, taught us about use depth in an interesting way, using props to create depth and using the line to full advantage… all very helpful things to help me make pictures. Even now when I create images, I need to think about what composition I should use.

In this module, I have also experimented with many different ways to make a picture. For example collage, I haven’t played with collage before, but though this module I gradually have that interest in collage. When I see something interesting from newspaper or magazine, I will cut it down and put it in my collage material box, which helps me easy to find an element for my new collage work. Another tool I began to like about though this course was the screen print. I like the outcome from the screen print workshop; I am excited to do more screen printing for my work.

Overall I am much enjoyed this module, it is not just only opened my eyes and show me how many approaches we can use in illustration, but also the thinking. Before I study this course I didn’t notice have much consideration we need to put in to make images, we need to think about many aspects of composition and frame, line quality, etc. I am pleased that I completed this module

Person of Notes 2 - Lamentation

Study of Lamentation

I want to focus on this one of the most famous Graham's work Lamentation. So I screenshot many times while I was watching this dance and draw it down. I also had a study of Graham's face, this kind of emotion in her dance not just shown in that movement but also on her face. I also write down some quotes that I like from Graham, they affected me deeply.

'Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion.'
'Dancers are the messengers of gods.'
'Dance is the hidden language of the soul of the body.'
'Pradice is a means of inviting the perfection desired.'

Person of Note

Brief: Produce a serious of illustration in response to a given person of note.

MARTHA GRAHAM

Martha Graham (1894-1991) is one of the earliest creators of modern dance in history.
Graham has sometimes been termed the "Picasso of Dance" in that her importance and influence to modern dance can be considered equivalent to what Pablo Picasso was to modern visual arts. Her impact has also been compared to the influence of Stravinsky on music and Frank Lloyd Wright on architecture.

The reason I choose Graham is I always have an interest in dance like ballet. I don't know much about modern dance; I want to explore this field and find out more information about it.

Google doodle
Google celebrate Martha Graham's 117th birthday
G: 'Frontier'  O: 'Night Journey'  O: 'Appalachian Spring'   L: 'Satyric Song'  E: 'Lamentation'

I watched some famous works by Graham, from 'Appalachian Spring', 'Seraphic Dialogue', 'Frontier' to 'Lamentation'. They are very different compare to classic ballet, not very romantic, no unrealistic fantasy, only that emotional expression. Her work is more about that communication between people, and that is why I was so touched by watching her dance.

Act of Kindness 2

ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR

My sticker 'Don't hurt me, I am also lives.' Encourage people protect trees. This is my first time use Adobe Illustrator in my work; it was quite tough I have to say. I wasted so much time to fix some mistake that I made at the beginning, and then gradually become more confidence in the end. I would love to work on Adobe Illustrator and create work in the future and have a try some of the functions I haven't use before.

Acts of Kindness

Brief

Produce a single, circular sticker design. Encouraging people to perform an act of kindness. Sticker should be using Adobe Illustrator and use no more than 2 colour.

Sketches

I honestly think this task is difficult. It is hard for me just using shapes, so different compare to what I normally draw. I also realized I don't have many ideas in my mind for this brief; I really should do more practice of making a use of shapes.

I like this idea, but I can not tell this belongs to an act of kindness.

I had this idea in my last module, and I quite like it. So I did it again and developed this idea a little bit.

York trip

In our last session of visual language, we went to York and visited the Railway Museum.

This is the last session of visual language, but I  was not at my best today. I felt cold and my hands are powerless in the afternoon when we doing an observational drawing in the garden. So I spend more time on walking and exploring things from the garden.
Comparing to drawing landscape or trees, I prefer to draw other people in the garden. I found myself being a little bit of inpatient when I am drawing a  plant, but to quickly capture other people's movement makes me excited and feel challenged. But It was not easy, because people will not hold that pose for a long time, so I have to remember all the detail in just a minute or even just a few seconds. usually, I just draw down the general outline and then use a little bit of imagination to try to finish the drawing.

I see face 2

Group Tutorial

I am very grateful for these interesting ideas. I noticed most of the people choose my wooden statue, seems like they are more interested in this character. So I decided to use this character in my gifs.
.

I see faces

Brief:  Make three gifs inspire by a song. Each gif needs to be made using a different method; Digital, Hand-draw/made, 3D or Lens.

Angelina- A. B. Crentsil

The song that I choose was Angelina by famous Ghanaian singer Alfred Benjamin Crentsil. The song is very joyful, relaxed rhythm, merry style. This is not an English song, so I can only understand he repeatedly singing one English lyric: Angelina, why you want me so. In this song it sings the name Angelina many times, I can feel that kind of loving feeling towards this girl. In the background, I can hear some drum beating and-and sound of sand hammer, so it gave me an African tribe feeling to me, very cheerful.
I first draw Angelina from my imagination, because this song keeps singing her name, I can not help it to think of what she look like, how beautiful she is.

In the background, there are many wooden statue, they singing song around Angelina.
Emotions of Angelina
Some sketches about some kind of aboriginal feeling from the song.
