Illumination (Final outcome)

Positive feedback:
Style
Use of tone
Composition
Colour (especially the red on the long strip)
Clear idea

Critical feedback:
Could have considered using physical media in outcomes more.
Simplifying the images reducing them to more basic and simple shapes.
The square doesn't link with other two, because its so light (use more colour)
Very muted and gloomy- would this stand out or be striking in an editorial context?
Could add some darker tones on the sides to create atmosphere and direct attention towards the centre.

Thoughts:
I have a mixed feeling about my final outcome this time.
Of course the process was very interesting I enjoyed it very much, but then I starting to see the problem. I finally notice my 'bad habits' which I drew too much details. I think all three drawings have this problem and the portrait one is the most serious. That idea is pretty clear and basic, but I added too much unnecessary detail onto it and it doesn't help showing the concept at all. When I realised this problem I was a bit late, so in the long strip one I tried to using less detail, but seems like I can't control myself I did it again...
I makes me frustrated, because detailing spent me quite a lot of time. I starting to ask myself what is illustration? To what extent is concise? Should I change my style to a more basic and simple look?

Illumination (process)

New brief:
Produce three illustrations that visually communicate your response to the given text.
Your illustrations should be produced using 2 colours plus stock to the following 3 formats:
1 response at 200mm x 200mm
1 response at 105mm x 200mm (portrait)
1 response at 290mm x 105mm (landscape)

The iron mask:
Social silence

3 ideas of square illustration, they are all about social silence.

In the end I chose this one. Five hands came out from behind this girl and covered her eyes, mouth and ears.

In my final out come I didn't show the girl's hand.

3 draft of the portrait illustration.

I chose this because I like the idea of 'we are all beast', even though we dressed well and act like a gentlemen( or a decent lady).

Another 3 drafts, I was worried that the beast concept doesn't  link to the article very much, so I gave up some ideas and chose the last one.

Photoshop

In our Photoshop session, I try to change my image colour,  using different Photoshop brushes to add some background and draw the outline of the head. I don't use photoshop very much, I normally use another program SAI, which is easy than photoshop and have a lot of same function and methods, so I wasn't too worry about using photoshop.

Observational Drawing

Today we bought our potted plant to college for observation session. We were limited to media, we only use different colours of ink for observational drawing.
My plant

I change the pot to a person's head. I imagine she is my humanized plant.

This one I focus on line, and I am very pleased with this outcome.

Drawing from reference
Draw from reference and memory

I think this is very challenging, every time I look at the image and thought that it was easy to remember, but then when I come back to my workspace and put up my pen, I just forgot many details from the image and can not remember the whole thing at one time no matter how long I stand in front of the image and try to capture all the things. I think I went too far because I just want to copy every single detail from the image. As our tutor says the reference is not replicate something.

Line Quality

This session we were focusing on line quality and investigating line in drawing. I have realised some functions of line that I haven’t seriously thought about.

In this session I used thick brushes a lot, because I know I have a bad habit and that slowed my progress. Every time I try to do some drawing, I would prefer to use pencil and I must have a rubber beside me. I know that is because I am not confidence with my line quality, I always keep changing those lines until I feel satisfy. So in this session I took the biggest brush and just go for it. I was quite surprise by the result, because this is totally out of my comfort zone. It makes me pleased and encourage me to do more drawing with thick brush.

How to use a piece of rope (Final)

This is my final typology poster, overall I think I like the result of my poster. I received some feedback for this poster, I am glad that people like my characters and my drawing style, because I was not confident about this comic style concept, I worried that if it didn't go well. I also noticed that people quite like the idea of 'the end' at the bottom of my poster.
There is one thing that I don't like about which is the colour. In my feedback people also mentioned it would look better with colour, I agree. I was thinking maybe I can use a strong colour just to highlight the rope, it might help easier to understand the concept.

How to use a piece of rope (process)

In this brief we need to make 100 ideas of how to...

I don't want to just showing different ways of how to use rope, I also trying to tell a story (so almost like a comic poster).
While I was drawing these ideas, I was also thinking of characters and the interaction between them.

I also got some feedback from my friends, they suggested:
Limit the number of characters, keep it under 2 members.
Simplify the way of drawing, don't need to show many details of character (like hair and clothing).
Maybe use black and white to give it comic or manga feeling.

Now the question is how can these ideas joined together, and make the story to flow and easy to follow. What I need to do next is select 25 ideas from this and make sure they can be linked to each other.

Observational Drawing

Field Trip

Today we went to Leeds University and Leeds Museum on our field trip, and we did some observational drawing in these places. This is our first task, and very basic. Because of the time-limited, I was just focusing on lines, and didn't do any shading. Although the weather is very cool, I enjoy our first task very much.
